Introduction / History

The Ogea Erima in PNG are an indigenous people group living in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea, especially in villages along Astrolabe Bay and near the Gogol and Yawor rivers in coastal lowland areas. Their identity as a community has long been shaped by generations of living in close connection with both forest and coastal environments, where fishing, gardening, and river life influence daily routines.

They speak the Ogea language, also known locally as Erima, which belongs to the Trans–New Guinea family within the Rai Coast group of Papuan languages. This places them within one of the many indigenous linguistic traditions of inland and coastal New Guinea, distinct from the Austronesian languages more common in other coastal zones.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Ogea Erima revolves around small village communities where extended family and kinship ties are foundational. People work together to tend gardens, fish in rivers and coastal waters, and gather from the surrounding forests to meet daily needs.

Homes are typically built using materials from the local environment, reflecting generations of practical knowledge about shelter and community life. Because the region is linguistically diverse, multilingualism is common: the Ogea language remains central within the community, while broader communication with other groups often involves trade languages such as Tok Pisin.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Ogea Erima are predominantly identified with Christianity, and Christian teaching and church life play a significant role in community values, gatherings, and worship. Some also put their faith in the spirit world. Portions of Scripture, including the New Testament, have been translated into the Ogea language, providing people with access to the core of God's Word in their heart language.

What Are Their Needs?

There is a continuing need for deeper discipleship and clear biblical teaching so that Ogea Erima believers are firmly grounded in scripture and can grow in spiritual maturity. Access to the full Bible in the Ogea language would further strengthen both individuals and the church community.

Training and equipping local leaders with sound doctrine and teaching skills is essential so pastors and teachers can guide their communities with wisdom. Strong leadership supports both spiritual growth and community well?being.

Because many Ogea Erima communities are located in rural and sometimes remote settings, practical challenges such as limited access to education, infrastructure, and resources can affect both daily living and ministry opportunities. Addressing both spiritual and practical needs helps support long?term growth.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Ogea Erima believers will grow in a deep faith in Jesus Christ that will draw them close to the cross.
Pray for local church leaders to be equipped with sound doctrine and strengthened in their ministry.
Pray that families will be rooted in biblical truth and that younger generations will follow Christ with conviction.
Pray for increased access to scripture, including continued translation and availability of the full Bible in the Ogea language.
Pray that the Ogea Erima church will soon send some of their own to unreached Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia.
